Dustin Johnson eyes maiden FedEx title

Dustin Johnson said it would “mean a lot” if he can add the FedEx Cup to his list of honours as he prepares for the BMW Championship.

The 33-year-old current world number one, who ended his wait to win a major title at last year’s US Open, narrowly missed out on winning the title, which carries a $10million bonus, 12 months ago when Rory McIlroy won the fourth and final play-off event of the FedEx Cup, the Tour Championship, via a play-off against Kevin Chappell and Ryan Moore.

Johnson’s play-off win against Jordan Spieth saw him triumph in the opening Northern Trust event, while he sits third in the current standings with two events left to play – starting at this week’s BMW Championship at Conway Farms near Chicago – before the Tour Championship in Atlanta next week.

A good result in the BMW Championship will set him up to try and get his hands on the FedEx Cup and Johnson is desperate to finally end his wait after some near misses.

Johnson, who is behind leader Spieth and Justin Thomas, said: “I’ve won a major. I haven’t won the FedEx Cup. But to me they go pretty hand in hand.

“So it means a lot. It’s something that I want to win and I drive myself to win it. Being the FedEx Cup champion is something that I want on my resume.”
