Tiger needs our help – Nicklaus

Legend Jack Nicklaus has called on the golf world to help Tiger Woods after he was arrested for driving under the influence on Monday.

The 77-year-old has broken his silence after Woods was arrested by police near Jupiter Island, close to his home in the state of Florida.

A police report has subsequently revealed that the 41-year-old was found asleep at the wheel of his car and did not know where he was.

Woods has since denied alcohol was involved and blamed a reaction to prescribed medications he is taking, presumably for the back issues which have continued to hamper his efforts to return to golf and restricted him to just 19 events on the PGA Tour since the end of 2013.

Nicklaus had always expected Woods to overhaul his record of 18 golf major wins, but the former world number one has been stuck on 14 titles for almost a decade since winning the 2008 US Open.

And the veteran has issued a plea for everyone involved in the sport to come together and help Woods in his hour of need.

Speaking ahead of his Memorial Tournament, Nicklaus said: “Tiger’s a friend, he’s been great for the game of golf and I think he needs all of our help. We wish him well.”

He added: “Tiger, I always thought, was going to break my record. I don’t know what’s going to happen [now].

“Does anybody want to see their record broken? Of course not. But do I want to see somebody not have the ability because of physical problems?

“I don’t like that at all. I feel bad for him that it has happened.”
