Rory McIlroy is reportedly set to play a practice round at Whistling Straits to gauge his fitness ahead of the PGA Championship.

The world number one ruptured the anterior ligament in his left ankle at the start of July, meaning he was unable to defend his Open Championship crown at St Andrews.

The injury has also ruled him out of defending his title at this week’s WGC-Bridgestone but according to Reuters, he has scheduled himself in for a practice round at Whistling Straits on Saturday.

McIlroy is still to confirm if he will play in the final major of the year, which he won 12 months ago at Valhalla in Kentucky.

However, the undulating Whistling Straits layout will give the 26-year-old a chance to test his ankle following treatment, and will give him the clearest indication of whether or not he will be able to compete in the event which gets underway next Thursday.
