The former world number one, currently ranked at 286, is two shots behind leader Jason Gore after rounds of 64, 65 and 68.
Gore managed a third round of 62, as did Sweden’s Jonas Blixt who is currently tied for second with Woods and Scott Brown on 13 under.
The 14-time major winner is confident he is still in contention and he feels another low score could well see him take the top prize in North Carolina.
He told reporters: “I need to go out there tomorrow and make a run and get myself up there and make some birdies.
“There’s a bunch of guys … at 13 [under]. There are a whole slew of guys at 12, 11, 10. Anybody can make a run and shoot the score Jason and Jonas did.”
