Is Matthew Wolff the PGA’s new star in the making?

Matthew Wolff claimed his first ever tour win when he collected the 3M Open trophy in early July. Wolff won the tournament on the final hole with an eagle putt. The win made the 20-year-old golfer the youngest player to win a PGA Tour tournament since Jordan Spieth in 2013. The PGA Tour season is now heading into the home stretch as just nine events remain on the schedule. Wolff’s win in Minnesota came in just his third PGA tournament start as a professional. The 20-year-old, who isn’t even old enough to legally drink an alcoholic beverage in the United States, won over $1.152 million in the first ever 3M Open tournament. Now, with less than two months under his belt as a professional, Wolff could become the PGA’s newest megastar.

Matthew Wolff’s rising star

Wolff turned professional in June of this year playing at the Travelers Championship in Connecticut. The young golfer did not finish the tournament ending the Travelers Championship at +2. Wolff followed up the event by missing the cut at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Unfazed by the two tournaments, Wolff bounced back to shoot a six-under 65 at the 3M Open. Despite being a new tournament on the PGA Tour, Wolff competed against some of the best and brightest on the circuit including 2019 PGA Championship winner Brooks Koepka.

The win didn’t just ensure Wolff of a massive payday, but it enabled him to earn a two-year PGA Tour exemption. He will now be able to play on the circuit over the next two years without worry.

Where did Matthew Wolff come from?

Wolff gained the right to play on the PGA Tour thanks to a sponsor exemption. A sponsor exemption basically gives a golfer the right to play thanks to a sponsor despite not meeting traditional criteria.

Although he has made three professional starts on the PGA Tour, Wolff actually played in February at the Waste Management Phoenix Open while still attending college. His sponsor exemption allowed him to compete although he hadn’t turned professional at the time.

Wolff won a glut of golf trophies and awards while attending Oklahoma State University. His performance in the 2018 NCAA Men’s Golf Championship ensures Oklahoma State of an 11th team title. He followed it up by winning the NCAA Men’s Golf Individual Championship in 2019, just weeks before turning professional.

Matthew Wolff’s unique swing

Wolff’s play has been praised by golf experts around the world following his 3M Open win. Even before his tour win, many golf insiders claimed Wolff would excel as a professional following his brilliance at the collegiate level.

One area that has set Wolff apart from other golfers is his unnatural golf swing. The right-handed Wolff uses a left leg kick to add power to his shot. It is an innovation he developed from years of playing baseball as a child. It has so far helped Wolff with his tee shot and drive distance. The 3M Open winner has plenty of time left on this year’s PGA Tour to continue his upward climb in the golf world. In a sport looking for a new megastar to take over for Tiger Woods, Wolff could be that star in the making.
