Rickie Fowler knows he needs to be on top of his game in order to record a historic win at the Players Championship.

Fowler won what is largely regarded as the ‘fifth major’, due to the quality of the field, last year after defeating Sergio Garcia and fellow American Kevin Kisner in a play-off.

The defending champion will be aiming to become the first player ever to retain the title and just the seventh player to win the tournament more than once.

Multiple major winner Tiger Woods, David Love III, Hal Sutton, Steve Elkington, Fred Couples and Jack Nicklaus are the only players to have lifted the trophy on more than one occasion.

Fowler has been in impressive form in 2016, with victory in the Abu Dhabi HSBC Golf Championship followed by a runners-up finish at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.

A tie for fourth was achieved in his latest outing in the Wells Fargo Championship but the Californian admits few mistakes can be made if he is going to repeat the 2015 result.

“You have to be pretty spot on. It’s a very fine line at this golf course,” he said. “The targets and the driving areas are very small and you don’t have much room around the greens.

“You’re playing against the best players in the world, but someone’s got to break it (the streak of no back-to-back winners) at some point though, so we’ll see what we can do.”
