Jim Furyk has hit back at Patrick Reed’s claims he was blindsided by being paired with Tiger Woods at the Ryder Cup.

The US side, who were hot favourites heading into the clash, suffered a heavy 17.5 – 10.5 defeat against the Europeans in Paris and there has been plenty of fallout since.

Reed has since hit out at Furyk and claims he was expecting to play with Jordan Spieth and not Woods, something which has now been shot down by the US captain.

Furyk says Reed was well aware of who his playing partner would be and there were no surprises.

“When I started looking at who [Tiger] would pair well with, I kept coming back to Patrick Reed,” Furyk told Golfweek.

“There was always the idea that we could go Tiger and [Justin Thomas] and Patrick and Jordan, but ultimately they knew going into the week weeks in advance, they knew they would start the Ryder Cup with Patrick and Tiger being partners.”
