Michelle Wie has confirmed she has undergone successful surgery on a hand injury that will keep her out for the rest of the season.

The 29-year-old has been plagued by problems in her right hand over the summer and decided to go under the knife in a bid to solve the issues once and for all, with the procedure hopefully dealing with a fracture, bone spurs and a nerve entrapment.

Wie, who has slipped to 26th in the world after only playing three regular-season tournaments since July, was forced out of the British Open in August and then also sat out the UL International Crown earlier this month due to the injury. She did manage to take part in the LPGA KEB Hana Bank Championship in Korea last week but ended up a disappointing 66th, with the hand injury proving prohibitive.

The American said on Twitter: “It?s been disheartening dealing with pain in my hand all year, but hopefully I am finally on the path to being and staying pain free.

“After 3 cortisone injections and some rest following the British Open, we were hoping it was going to be enough to grind through the rest of the season, but it just wasn?t enough to get me through.

“So I made the decision after Hana Bank to withdraw from the rest of the season, come back to the states, and get surgery to fix these issues.”
