Poulter maintains major hope

British golfer Ian Poulter insists he can still win a major title, despite edging closer to the age of 40.

The four-time Ryder Cup winner, 39, is yet to taste victory in any of the big four events, with his best finish coming in the 2008 Open championship where he was second behind Padraig Harrington.

It has been a tough couple of years on both the European and PGA Tour and the Brit last tasted success in 2012 in the WGC-HSBC Champions tournament.

Injuries, along with a lack of form, have seen the 2011 Match Play winner slip to 42nd in the world rankings, dropping 15 places from the end of last year.

Poulter, who is getting ready to host the British Masters which starts on Thursday, is still confident in his ability and believes he can triumph in a major at some stage.

“My game when I’m on my game is good enough to beat anybody. I know that. I still believe that, and that’s the main thing,” he said. “Inside my head, I still believe that my game is good enough and the minute that gets dented, then we’ve got an issue.”

Poulter, who will be 40 in January, will tee off alongside Thorbjorn Olesen and Miguel Angel Jimenez at his home course of Woburn as the competition returns to the European Tour for the first time since 2008.
