Donaldson three clear in Thailand

Jamie Donaldson will take a three-shot lead into round two of the Thailand Golf Championship after a sensational 63 on Thursday.

The Welshman was on fire at Amata Spring Country Club and reached nine-under par after carding nine birdies in an error-free round to open up a sizeable advantage over his rivals.

Home favourites Chanat Sakulpolphaisan and Chinnarat Phadungsil share second place alongside Spain’s Sergio Garcia on -6, while another Thai star, Natipong Srithong, is tied with American Brett Munson in fifth place on five-under.

Germany’s Martin Kaymer, Matthew Fitzpatrick of England and South Africa’s Jbe Kruger are part of a five-man group on -4, while 11 players, including European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke and Dutchman Joost Luiten, are in a group of 11 stars on three-under.

But it was all about Donaldson on day one and the 2014 Ryder Cup star insists he will remain focused on his own game despite the obvious challenges that will emerge.

“I played really good all day and I couldn’t really do anything wrong. I just need to continue this form for the next few days and not concentrate on things that are out of my control or ahead of me,” he said.

“I just want to stay in the present as they say and take it one day at a time.”
