Luke Donald has confirmed he almost considered retiring from golf after a barren four-year spell without a tour title.

The 38-year-old has failed to win a title since he BMW PGA Championship in 2012, but did show signs of improvement after finishing second in the RBC Heritage last week.

Donald has a chance to continue making steps forward this week at the Valero Texas Open, with the Englishman holding out hope for a European Ryder Cup place this year.

The former world number one has admitted it has been a difficult spell in his career, but feels things are on the up following his efforts at Hilton Head.

Donald told Sky Sports: “It’s been very tough and at times I even thought ‘do I want to continue working this hard and not getting much out of it?’

“Certainly when you are playing well and competing each week the game seems pretty easy, but the real aim is when you are not playing well how many times can you go out there and keep working until something clicks.

“Obviously last week was hopefully a big step in the right direction for me.”
