Donald Trump has reacted angrily to the news the WGC-Cadillac Championship is to move from his Doral course to Mexico City from 2017.

The PGA announced on Wednesday that the event would no longer be played at Trump National Doral after agreeing a seven-year deal with Mexican firm Grupo Salinas.

Not only will the tournament be played in Mexico City, it will also be re-branded the WGC-Mexico Championship after luxury car firm Cadillac reportedly decided not to continue its sponsorship of the event.

PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem said in a statement that the switch was purely down to sponsorship, claiming Mr Trump’s controversial comments had made it difficult to attract support for the tournament.

US Presidential hopeful Trump has criticised the PGA Tour’s decision to no longer use Doral, claiming the switch will have a wider impact on the community in Florida.

“It is a sad day for Miami, the United States and the game of golf to have the PGA Tour consider moving the World Golf Championships, which have been hosted in Miami for the last 55 years, to Mexico,” Trump said.

“No different than Nabisco, Carrier and so many other American companies, the PGA Tour has put profit ahead of thousands of American jobs, millions of dollars in revenues for local communities and charities and the enjoyment of hundreds, and thousands of fans who make the tournament an annual tradition.”
