Ian Poulter is a major doubt for the Ryder Cup at the end of September after being ruled out for four months with a foot injury.

The Associated Press is reporting that the Englishman, who has struggled with an ongoing foot problem for several months, has now been advised that the injury needs rest and he will miss a large chunk of the summer as a result.

Poulter has missed his last two cuts on the PGA Tour and has failed to win a tournament since 2012, recently slipping down to No.85 in the world rankings.

The 40-year-old, however, is renowned for his ability in the Ryder Cup and boasts an impressive record in the team event when representing Europe five times against USA.

Poulter has won 12 matches in the Ryder Cup, while he’s drawn four and lost just twice against the Americans, so if he doesn’t make it, his absence will be a big blow to captain Darren Clarke’s plans ahead of the competition getting underway at Hazeltine at the end of September.
