Luke Donald has secured his place at next week’s US Open following a play-off at the Ohio qualifying event.

The Englishman was one of six men in contention for five places at the upcoming major at Oakmont in Pennsylvania and the 38-year-old claimed his spot at the second play-off hole before confirming the news on Instagram.

“Mission accomplished,” he wrote. “Can’t wait to get to Oakmont next week for the US Open.”

He added: “I’ve had to qualify the last two years for the US Open, haven’t liked it, but somehow making it this way feels pretty damn rewarding.”

Donald’s best performance in the US Open came in 2013 when he finished in a tie for eighth at Merion.

American quartet Patrick Rodgers, Jason Allred, Richard Schembechler II and Scottie Scheffler also made it through the play-off to book their places at Oakmont, with the action getting underway on June 16.
