Six added to US Open line-up

Organisers have announced that six players have been added to the US Open field for this week’s tournament at Oakmont.

Memorial Tournament winner William McGirt has sneaked in at the 11th hour and will be joined by five others from sectional qualifying.

The United States Golf Association had held back a few places for any players who moved into the world’s top 60 and McGirt is the man to benefit after his victory at Muirfield Village Golf Club on June 5.

The 36-year-old will be joined by another five Americans, with Zach Edmondson, Tony Finau, Kevin Foley, Daniel Summerhays and Mike van Sickle all landing a place.

It will be McGirt’s first US Open experience on one of the toughest courses in America but the South Carolina resident will head to Pennsylvania with confidence, having secured another three top-10s this season as well as his taking first PGA Tour title.

Jason Day is favourite to win, while Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are also in decent form ahead of the event, with the duo having claimed titles on either side of the Atlantic over the past few weeks.
