Murray takes early lead in Texas

Grayson Murray leads the Valero Texas Open by one shot after carding a five-under 67 at TPC San Antonio.

The 24-year-old American approached the final two holes having fired five birdies and suffered a sole double-bogey, but back-to-back birdies at the 17th and 18th ensured he edged ahead of Billy Horschel, Ryan Moore, Keegan Bradley, Chesson Hadley and Matt Atkins in the chasing pack on four under.

“I hit the ball really well and that gave myself lots of opportunities,” Murray told Sky Sports. “It’s always nice to get off to a start like that in tough conditions.”

Defending champion Kevin Chappell opened with a level-par 72, while the 2017 Masters winner Sergio Garcia, who is returning to action for the first time after missing the cut at Augusta National earlier this month, endured a disappointing day as he struggled to a two-over 74.
