Si Woo Kim climbed 40 places to move two shots clear at the Wyndham Championship as he narrowly missed out on a second round of 59.

The South Korean blitzed the Sedgefield Country Club as he carded a remarkable round featuring eight birdies and an eagle to finish the day on 12-under for the PGA Tour event.

It could have been even better for the 21-year-old, who had another birdie opportunity at his last hole but missed his long putt as it slipped past the edge of the cup.

Kim leads Kevin Na, Hideki Matsuyama, Jim Furyk and Lucas Glover, the latter putting himself in contention by nearly matching the leader’s round of 60.

The 2009 US Open champion had blitzed the front nine, carding five birdies in the first seven holes, but his only blemish proved to be costly as he bogeyed the last and missed out on a score of 60.

Glover was disappointed not to match Kim’s round but hopes to put him under pressure over the weekend as he looks to attack the course once again.

“You’ve got to go low here, especially if you get some rain and it softens up. You’ve got to get it on the fairway first as you can’t get it close out of this rough,” he told the Golf Channel.

“The focus tomorrow will be getting on the fairway at all costs and then attacking from there.”
