Dunne claims maiden win with stunning closing round at British Masters

An incredible closing 61 from Paul Dunne saw him claim his maiden European Tour win at the British Masters.

The Irishman shot to fame in 2015 when he led heading into the final round of the Open Championship while still an amateur but he has struggled at times since turning pro.

However, having shown some encouraging form in recent months, it all came together for Dunne at Close House, as seven birdies and an eagle saw him home, finishing in style by chipping in at the 18th – a result no-one at the best sportsbooks reviewed saw coming.

The 24-year-old’s tally of 20-under was enough to give him a three-shot victory over Rory McIlory, while Robert Karlsson took third and Hartlepool’s Graeme Storm was part of a share for fourth in Newcastle.

Dunne’s previous best saw him lose out in a play-off to Edoardo Molinari in April’s Hassan Trophy and he admitted he was relieved to have broken his duck.

“It feels great. I feel like I’ve been up there a few times and never put my foot down to win it,” said Dunne. “I have come close, so it’s nice to put the demon off my back and get my first one.”
