Lingmerth sets out Ryder Cup goal

David Lingmerth is looking forward to playing in some European Tour events this season to try and qualify for the Ryder Cup team.

The 28-year-old has plied his trade on the PGA Tour since turning professional in 2010, a natural progression after attending university in the USA.

But the Swede has now taken up membership of the European Tour, with a view to making Darren Clarke’s dozen who will look to defend the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine next year.

The qualification period for the team event is now up-and-running, and Lingmerth will kick off his quest to make the cut at this week’s Australian PGA Championship.

The event Down Under is co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and the European Tour, giving the Scandinavian an early chance to get some points on the board.

And the Florida resident admits he is relishing the chance for a globe-trotting lifestyle and the opportunity to test himself against the Americans next autumn.

“I’m hoping to get to play some more on the European Tour this year coming up and make myself eligible for the Ryder Cup,” he told reporters on Tuesday. “If I play good enough I’ll hopefully make the team; if not at least I gave it a good try.

“Growing up, the Ryder Cup was definitely one of the highlights of the year that you would tune into. It’s a dream for a lot of us to play in that and win Ryder Cup so I’m really looking forward to playing some more on the European Tour and giving it a good shot.”
