Anthony Wall has won the Aberdeen Asset Management Paul Lawrie Match Play after beating Alex Noren in the final on Sunday.

The victory was the Englishman’s first success on the European Tour since his triumph at the Alfred Dunhill Championship in January 2000, a wait of 16 years and 204 days, the longest gap between titles in the tour’s history.

Wall had also played in 431 events since his maiden victory, but the 41-year-old held his nerve during a tight encounter at Archerfield Links Golf Club, to eventually finish one up on his Swedish opponent and claim his second title.

Wall admitted after the victory that he had doubted whether he would ever win another tournament, but he believes the success was just reward for all the hard work that he and his family have put in over the years.

He said: “It’s amazing because it’s such a hard job to beat everyone because everyone is so good.

“I did wonder whether it would ever come again. I’m just so pleased for my parents. they put in so much when I was young. I’ve got two children that just want to see there dad win, I’m speechless, it’s phenomenal.”

The world number 234, who last achieved a top ten finish at the Joburg Open in January, could not put his finger on exactly why his game had clicked into gear in Scotland.

He added: “I don’t know what it was, you don’t know what you’re going to get. I felt calm all week, I putted well. I just found something with my putting a little bit.

Jame Morrison secured third place in the day’s other match, as he defeated Oliver Fisher 4 & 2 in the third place play-off.
