Matthew Fitzpatrick says he has no more goals set at the moment and is just focused on playing some nice golf.

Fitzpatrick achieved his main aim this season by making Europe’s Ryder Cup team although the overall outcome in Hazeltine didn’t go to plan, with the USA recording a thumping 17-11 victory to win the trophy for the first time since 2008.

The 22-year-old from Sheffield failed to win a single point but he will hope to have benefited from his first experience and take it into the 2018 edition in France.

The dust has barely settled from America’s triumph but the world number 45 is already back in action at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, which starts on Thursday on the Old Course at St Andrews.

Winning a third European Tour title would be fantastic for Fitzpatrick, who admits he has no specific aims for the remainder of the season.

“It’s been a big year for me, obviously making the Ryder Cup team, that was my goal at the start of the year, if I’m honest,” he said. “Now I just want to play as well as I can from now to the end of the season.

“I’m not really setting myself any targets. Obviously you always try to win, so that’s sort of always the goal but, yeah, just purely going to try to play as well as I can and work as hard as I can until The Race to Dubai.”

Fitzpatrick is one of six members of Darren Clarke’s Ryder Cup side that are competing in Scotland this week, with Lee Westwood, Danny Willett, Martin Kaymer, Rafael Cabrera-Bello and Thomas Pieters all teeing it up.
