Stricker handed vice-captain role

Steve Stricker says he is ‘honoured’ to have been named as the third vice-captain for America’s President’s Cup team.

The 48-year-old has enjoyed an illustrious time playing in the tournament but will now be a part of the management team as USA aims for a sixth consecutive victory.

America have been comfortable winners in the event over the past 10 years with an 18.5 – 15.5 point win the closest the International opponents have come to taking the trophy in the last decade.

The last time the US lost their grip on the cup was back in 1998 in Australia where they suffered a heavy 20.5 – 11.5 loss, with likes of South African Ernie Else, Fijian Vijay Singh and Aussie Greg Norman starring for the victors.

Stricker has been a constant figure in the President’s Cup in his time and the 12-time PGA Tour winner was part of the teams that won in 1996, 2007, 2009, 2011 and 2013.

The word number 133 also played a part in the 2008 Ryder Cup success over Europe and the experienced campaigner is looking forward to the new challenge of being a vice-captain to Jay Haas in South Korea this October.

“I’m honored that Jay asked me to join the U.S. team as one of his captain’s assistants,” he said. “I absolutely love the team atmosphere of the Presidents Cup and would have been sad to miss out on it for the first time in a decade, especially on such a momentous occasion as the event being played in Asia for the first time.”
