Darren Clarke is confident he can rediscover some form at this week’s Italian Open.

The Northern Irishman has struggled for consistency in recent years, not winning since claiming the Open in 2011 but looked good last month in the opening couple of rounds of the Made in Denmark, only to fall away over the weekend.

As European Ryder Cup captain, Clarke understandably has other things to think about ahead of next year’s event and could be forgiven for becoming distracted.

The 47-year-old remains as competitive as ever though and says he is looking forward to one of his favourite weeks of the year in Milan.

“There has been some good and some bad golf recently – a little more bad than good to be honest but it’s great to be back in Italy and we’re looking forward to it,” Clarke told the European Tour’s official website.

“The golf course is in unbelievable condition considering they have had the hottest summer on record here in Milan and then there has been so much rain recently that it’s very soft.

“The Italian Open is just one of those weeks that makes The European Tour so great.”
