Jones seals Australian Open glory

Matt Jones held on to win the Australian Open ahead of a stellar field in Sydney.

The home favourite went into the final round with a three stroke lead but almost blew his chance after finding himself at three over for the day after two holes.

Jones continued to struggle for rhythm at Australian Golf Club but eventually signed for a 73 to give him a four-round total of eight-under.

That was enough to give him a one shot victory over major winners Adam Scott and Jordan Spieth, while veteran Rod Pampling finished fourth after a stunning course record of 61.

The day belonged to Jones though and afterwards he admitted he was honoured to have joined the illustrious list of past winners.

“I got the job done,” he told a press conference. “There was a lot of stress and a lot of anxious moments but I came through with that lipping put on the last to get the trophy.

“To have my name on this trophy with (Jack) Nicklaus, (Jack) Newton, (Greg) Norman, all those guys, is a dream come true for me and something that can never be taken away.”
