Billy Hurley III admitted it was a huge relief to pick up his first PGA Tour win at the Quicken Loans National on Sunday.

The American secured a three-shot victory although it was not all plain sailing during the final round of the tournament.

He eventually finished in front of Vijay Singh after bouncing back from a bogey on the 12th hole.

Hurley dropped to 15-under par but, after saving par at the next, he then kicked on to complete his maiden win after picking up birdies at 15 and 16.

Speaking after the round, the 34-year-old said: “I couldn’t think of a better tournament for my first PGA Tour win. I’m just thrilled to have gotten it done today.

“It’s been a hard year. It’s been a really hard year, so it’s nice to have something go well.”

Veteran Ernie Els was also in with a shout of winning but fell away after a double-bogey at the 10th. He finished with a round of 72 to finish in fifth.
