Tiger Woods has won his first major title since 2008 after claiming a one-shot victory at the Masters on Sunday.

The 43-year-old started the day two shots behind leader Francesco Molinari but as the Italian faltered Woods held his nerve, recording a round of 70 that included six birdies and four dropped shots.

That saw the American finish on 13-under for the tournament and he even had the luxury of being able to bogey the last hole, as he claimed his first major title since the 2008 US Open and his first victory at Augusta since 2005.

The victory also completes a fantastic comeback for Woods, who has had to overcome injuries and personal challenges to return to the pinnacle of the sport.

American trio Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Xander Schauffele finished in a tie for second on 12-under, while Jason Day, Webb Simpson, Tony Finau and Molinari were a shot further back – the latter’s challenge unravelling following a double-bogey at the par-five 15th.

Ian Poulter was the pick of the British contingent coming in a share for 12th on eight-under, while Rory McIlroy saved his best until last, producing a final round of 68 to finish on five-under, but his dreams of completing a career Grand Slam must wait another 12 months at least.
